Not for love of money, but of Humanity. "Greater is he who works for the good of all, then he who works for the good of himself only" ~ Matthew 25:40: "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'"- (NIV). Maybe your thread title was wrong in the first place because there was no "Betrayal of the original intent of the GRC System of elections". The original intent may have been "To allow the weak ones to hitch a ride on the strong ones", so that more of their own candidates can be elected and the reasons given for the need to have GRCs was merely an excuse...Let me show this possibility by some simple claculations...

 ...
Imagine what is possible if you start adjusting the election boundaries so that the weightage changes, which may be what they have done after seing that they were still at risk with 3-candidate GRCs, so it became 5...But these are merely assumptions which may not be true, however there may not be any other way to know the truth unless we are willing replace the ruling elitists...
@ "The original intent may have been 'To allow the weak ones to hitch a ride on the strong ones'"
U mean: 'GRCs make it easier to find top talent: SM' [ST 26June2006] report rite.
I not so brave as u knoe, I see election website: 'Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs)': "The GRC system was established in 1988 to ensure that the minority racial communities in Singapore will always be represented in Parliament. .. " [Elections Department Singapore](last accessed 23Aug2010). And like most loyal Singaporean, accept PAP as right, so I only say "Betrayal of the original intent of the GRC System of elections" - implying that at least, the original intent of GRC system might have been commendable, only that its implementation had at LATER time been hijacked so obtusely by PM Lee's over-zealousness towards "I'm going to spend all my time thinking what's the right way to fix them, to buy my supporters votes, how can I solve this week's problem and forget about next year's challenges?"(' PM Lee says countries worldwide respect and admire Singapore's proven system'[YouTube/@1m10s]) that the GRC system of elections is now more effective at 'reducing SMCs' (89.286%) as compared to its effectiveness at 'ensuring minority representation' (64.599%)-
I dun dare say outright 'To allow the weak ones to hitch a ride on the strong ones' - later kena arrested (without trial) for sedition[wiki] and perjury[wiki]- trouble come many many.

Chicken me scared scared U know.

@ "after seing that they were still at risk with 3-candidate GRCs, so it became 5"
The number is actually '6' FYI.
Anyway, PM Lee says that the number of 6memb GRCs should decrease in coming elections- 'GRCs to shrink, but they will stay' [ST, 28May2009].

Oki, cannot talk here too much, otherwise U know who will soon come a knocking...

Voters vote for the party, not for individuals, thus weak candidates can still win a seat in Parliament by riding the coattails of stronger candidates."
